Dams that suddenly appear in remote mountain areas, streets one casually walks through on a routine basis, and other landscapes that humans have unconsciously created in natural surroundings, represent the “beauty of contemporary landscapes” as highlighted through Shibata’s own unique filter.
Known primarily for his tense black-and-white photographs, Shibata became aware that he had rejected certain sceneries because they were unsuitable for black-and-white, and shifted to color photography around 2005, adding an element of lush coloration to the quietude of his monochrome works.
