Johan van der Keuken's work was first publicized through wij zijn 17 [we are 17-years-old], a small photobook published in 1955 when he was 17. The book comprised carefully composed and lit black and white images of his friends. Despite his sensitivity to these details, the photographs showed his subjects in their natural state. It's hard to believe that the sophisticated sensibility displayed in the photographs belonged to a 17-year-old.
